Home Elevators-The Difference Between Winding Drum vs. Traction vs Hydraulic vs. Pneumatic (Vacuum Elevator)

Home elevators come in a variety of different styles, looks and designs.  However, there are also different types of elevators.  Depending on a home’s structure, one type of elevator design may be more ideal than another. Some take up more space while others require different motors and components.  So, before getting set into just one type, try to understand what will fit within your budget and space.  Let's take a look at these different types of home elevator options.

Hydraulic home elevators

Hydraulic home elevators work with cylinders and pistons.  As with anything hydraulic, hydraulic oils are used to move the piston—which in turn moves the cab up and down.  The release of the oil is from electrical valves that control the elevator.  These tend to be the more expensive option for most home owners.  However, here at Luxe Home Elevators we have created and designed our very own hydraulic home elevator with our own components, which means, you get a hydraulic home elevator for less than the competition without compromise on the safety or quality of the home elevator.

Traction home elevators

These operate by means of pulleys that use steel ropes and belts.  There is a counterweight that offsets the weight of the cab and passengers.  These tend to be a bit more energy efficient than that of the hydraulic styles, but they all have their own pros and cons.  An electrical motor along with these pulley systems are responsible for moving the cab up and down the floors.  The electrical motor used in a traction home elevator can turn both directions, which allows for this movement.  They come in both geared and gearless as options, which we can further explain later.

Winding drum

The winding drum elevator simply put are cables that are attached to the cab, they are then rolled up some pulleys and attached to a large drum.  These cables are responsible for pulling the cab up the shaft or hoistway.  This is a simple yet effective design.  However, this type of elevator will require you to have the cables replaced every 3 to 5 years, depending on your use.  This style is not as smooth as other options and can be quite noisy as well.  They are more efficient and versatile than the popular hydraulic option but may need some excavating to be installed.

Pneumatic home elevators

Pneumatic home elevators are commonly called vacuum elevators as that is essentially how they operate. They have turbines on the top that regulate the air inside the chamber, and the movement of the elevator is propelled by this air regulation.  They are typically a smooth ride and made from a clear material such as glass.  These types of elevators are very easy to install and don't require a machine room, which means they can be installed in smaller areas.  If you are finding it hard to find a location to put an elevator shaft in your home, this might be the perfect option for you.
